Social 10-1
Welcome to Social Studies 10-1. This site will be organized both by Days and by Units, or, as they are called in Social Studies, "Related Issues." There are four of these. In addition, this site will have links to assignments, notes, videos, current events, and many other course materials.

- What do you see? – literally describe the cartoon
- Describe and explain any symbolism: if there is any labeling, exaggeration, irony or analogies
- What is the ideological message of the cartoon (what is the message the cartoonist wants to make)?
- How can you use what we have learned in class help to explain the key message of the cartoon? (think about the key terms, theory in your notes *focus more on the big picture instead of examples, which is the next question)
- What is an example that helps to demonstrate or explain the ideas of the cartoonist? (This can be hypothetical or a current event)
- Why would someone support the ideological viewpoint of the source? (Be specific!)
- Why would someone disagree with the ideological viewpoint of the source? (Be specific!)
- Summarize the key ideas of the source (without repeating the source)
- What is the ideological message of the source (what is the point the author wants us to think about)?
- What is the key section of the source that helps to demonstrate your interpretation of the key ideological message? (Take a section of a direct quote, do not merely repeat the entire source)
- How can you use what we have learned in class help to explain the key message of the quote? (think about the key terms, theory in your notes *focus more on the big picture instead of examples, which is the next question)
- What is an example that helps to demonstrate or explain the ideas of the author? (This can be hypothetical or a current event)
- Why would someone support the ideological viewpoint of the source? (Be specific!)
- Why would someone disagree with the ideological viewpoint of the source? (Be specific!)
- Summarize the key information in the source (do not merely repeat the title of the graph or chart).
- How can this information relate to a key topic or issue (what is the point; why was this source provided)?
- How can you use what we have learned in class help to explain the key message of the quote? (think about the key terms, theory in your notes *focus more on the big picture instead of examples, which is the next question)
- What is an example that helps to demonstrate or explain the ideas of the source? (This can be hypothetical or a current event)

Who Influences You?
A Research Project
So far, we have looked at the following:
What is globalization?
How does it occur?
How can it influence you?
As well as:
What is individual identity?
What is collective identity?
How are these formed?
What can impact these?
I would like to take two days and explore these ideas further. By the time you hit Grade 10, there are a number of people or things that have influenced you and contributed to who you are.
We will start by asking some pretty serious questions about ourselves:
1. What are your three or four most important principles?
2. Why do you stand by these? Why do they emerge as your most important principles?
3. Is there anyone in your life who has contributed to this?
4. Who are they? How did you come to know them?
Next, we will look at this from a wider perspective.
1. What are the three most important parts of your identity? How do you express these three?
2. Who do you admire or look up to? How has this contributed to your identity?
Choose two people or things that you admire, you look up to, or have influenced your identity. We will be doing a brief research project on them to answer the following questions:
1. Who are they? What is their claim to fame?
2. Biographical details(where are they from? when were they born? what school did they go to? etc.)
3. What are their accomplishments? What have they done to set themselves apart?
4. How has this influenced you and your identity?
5. How did you learn about this person?
Things Questions
1. What is it?
2. Describe in detail what the thing or place is.
3. Why is it special to you?
4. How has this influenced you and your identity?
5. How did you learn about this thing/place?
You will be creating an artifact that demonstrates this information. You can do this in any number of ways. It can be a youtube video, a podcast, a written assignment, a dramatic presentation, a song you write, anything, really.
This will be marked according to this rubric with the following changes:
