Day 6
Today, we will be discussing nutrition using notes on the internet Then, I will hand out a food for the day tracker, and we will be analyzing our own results tomorrow.
The Notes can be found here:
-please read through the notes provided.
Make your own point form notes on a new blog post entitled:
Nutrition
-you should have 4-6 bullet points per page
In addition, complete the questions as you go. Your notes and questions will be for marks.
The Food tracker can be downloaded here for men, and here for women.
Print this off and track your food for the next 24 hours.
As we go, please complete the following assignments:
Find 5 nutritional labels on the internet or at home. For each one, identify the 3 largest ingredients.
Do you think this food is healthy or not?
What is an alternative?
Also, once we are finished our food tracker, identify 5 things that you can do to improve your nutritional health.
Tomorrow, we will put all of our information into the interactive food guide and it will tell you how your nutritional health is!
The interactive guide can be found here.
Thinking about the food you eat, and the level of physical activity in your life, please, on a new blog post entitled, "Nutritional Goals," write down 5 things you plan to do to improve your nutritional health. For each, explain, in point form, how this will help improve this area of health. Be sure to publish it!
Day 7
Today, we will be talking about relationships, and how to engage in healthy relationships. To begin, we will brainstorm and do some class discussion. Take 5 minutes to think about what makes a healthy relationship. What characteristics make up a healthy relationship?
The first relationship we will discuss is a family. There are many different types of families, and they all have different characteristics:
Nuclear family - this consists of a couple and one or more children
Extended family - this family group is made up of three generations or more, including grandparents, uncles, aunts, as well as immediate family, such as parents and siblings
Foster family -In this family group, an individual or a couple provides a substitute family for children referred by the courts or government agencies
Single-parent family - This family group consists of one parent and one or more biological or adopted children.
Blended family - This family group consists of a couple—at least one of whom has children from a previous relationship—and their children together.
Grandparent-led family - In this family group, grandparents are raising children whose biological parents have died or can no longer take care of the children.
Even within these family groups, families can be different. In fact, all families are different in one way or another,
Questions:
1. With a partner or friend, discuss the portrayal of 2 families on TV today. What types of families do they represent? How do the family members in each of these families relate to one another? Are the portrayals of these families and their problems realistic? What types of problems do these TV families face? How do they deal with these problems?
2. How does your family deal with problems?
Part 2: Conflict Resolution
Successful resolution of conflict can be tricky. These steps can help:
Step 1: Define the confict. Describe the confict in clear, concrete terms.Focus on behaviours or problems, not people. Don’t blame or layguilt trips.
Step 2: Seek first to understand, then to be understood. Try not to prejudge the individual or the circumstance before you have all of the information. Listen to the other person’s point of view. Ask questions that will clarify the situation. Explain how you see the problem. Communicate your understanding positively and respectfully.
Step 3: Take turns offering alternative solutions to resolve the confict. If possible, offer a way for the other person to save face.
Step 4: Examine consequences of each solution. Then agree to a solution that you both can accept. Sometimes you will have to compromise, but a compromise can be a win-win situation because each persongets something. The important thing is that you work toward achieving an acceptable resolution.
Question: Think about these steps and think of a time when you have been in conflict with someone. Try to imagine if you went through these steps. How would this approach help to solve the conflict, or at least make it not as bad? How will this approach help you in future conflict resolution?
Day 7
Today and tomorrow, we will be watching a film that looks at the themes we have covered so far, namely:
1. Goal Setting
2. Nutrition/Active Living
3. Relationships/Conflict Resolution
There is a question sheet here that you can download. Please complete the questions on a separate piece of paper.

-decision making.

On your blog, please write down these notes, and then write down whether you are a right brain thinker or a left brain thinker.
Discuss Intellectual Dimension of Intelligence.
Convergent vs. Divergent Thinking
Left Brain/Right Brain Test
We will begin with notes. Then, we will watch these videos on critical thinking.

Emotional Intelligence Notes
Emotional Health: is our ability to deal with emotions both positive, and negative, can be divided into two categories.
1) Emotional Maturity- the ability of a person to control his or her emotions, rather than allow them to be in control.
2) Emotional Intelligence- the ability to sense what is really going on in a situation and understand other peoples thoughts and feelings to express empathy and respond appropriately.
Stress and its Impact on Us:
Our fight or flight response to stress limits our brain function.
It takes roughly 45 minutes to restore 100% brain function.
When you feel angry or threatened, try the following strategies to avoid making things worse:
1) Walk away.
2) Try to calmly discuss a solution.
3) Try to find a third-party, preferably an adult to help find a solution.
Steps For Handling Decisions For Problems
1) Take time to make the decision.
2) Identify and understand the problem.
3) Identify the options.
4) Study and weigh the options. (pros and cons list)
5) Actually make your decision.
6) Act on your decision.
7) Evaluate your decision. (was this decision good/bad?)
Then, you can choose from the following assignments:
A) Think of a time when you lost control of your emotions. Describe what happened, and discuss what you could have done to prevent it from happening.
B) Think of a time when you had a disagreement with someone. Write a story that describes it and explain which of the decision making steps you went through. How did these steps help?
Day 10
Stress Management Notes
Stress Management:Stress is a state of strain and tension.
Stressors- Things that cause stress:
Examples:
-school
-friends
-work
-homework
-family
-being busy.
Humans undergo a three step response to stress.
1) Alarm stage: during this stage the body prepares for action, and people have more energy and strength to help respond.
2) Resistance stage: this is where the body tries to function normally, but it takes energy to do so.
3) Exhaustion stage: going through the first two stages of stress leads to exhaustion.
Some stress is healthy, like anything moderation is the key. However, stress overload can cause people to become sick. It can affect you in the following ways:
1) Emotionally- people can become irritable, angry, sad, anxious, or even depressed.
2) Physically- people can become exhausted, may develop digestive problems, or even chest pain.
3) Intellectually- people have difficulty concentrating, and they may become indecisive.
4) Behaviorally- people can lose the ability to respond appropriately to situations.
Responding to Stress:
Stress is unavoidable, but there are some ways to minimize the impacts:
You can prepare for stressful situations, by doing the following:
BEFORE STRESS
1) Build your physical reserves by making healthy food choices, being active, and getting enough sleep.
2) Limit your intake of caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs.
3) Develop a strong support system. Give yourself someone to talk to, can be friends, or family.
DURING STRESS
Strategies for During Stressful Situations:
1) Identify the source of the stress, knowing what to target helps you deal with it.
2) Put events into perspective, some stressors take more of our energy than they deserve. "Don't sweat the small stuff!"
3) Use positive self-talk.
4) Use your support system.
5) Release emotions, sometimes letting a few tears out can relieve tension. Physical exercise can also help.
6) Where possible, remove yourself from stressful situations.
Stress Management Assignment:
Write down your top 5 stressors:
For each, please write how they affect you(emotionally, intellectually, etc)
As well, write down whether you feel that you handle this stress effectively. What is one thing you could do to handle each stressor better?

Resource Management:This is the process of controlling and organizing resources in order to achieve goals.

There are roughly seven kinds of human resources, examples are:
-Knowledge
-Talents and skills
-Health
-Physical or emotional energy
-Relationships you have
-Imagination
-Attitude
2) Non-human Resources: these are simply resources that are not any part of a human being.

Factors That Affect Your Resource Choice:
-Needs and wants
